PTFE electrical insulation tape uses a high-purity PTFE film backing with a pressure-sensitive silicone adhesive. It is designed for electrical insulation and component protection in environments where heat, chemicals, moisture, or high-frequency performance can challenge conventional plastic tapes. The smooth, conformable film wraps coils, conductors, cable joints, busbars, and irregular parts while adding minimal bulk.
| Backing | Unsupported PTFE film |
| Adhesive | Pressure-sensitive silicone adhesive |
| Typical Total Thickness | 0.08 / 0.13 / 0.18 mm, depending on grade |
| Color | Natural white; other options subject to grade and quantity |
| Width | Common slit widths from 10 mm; custom widths available |
| Length | Standard and custom roll lengths available |
| Dielectric Strength | Grade- and thickness-dependent; confirmed by test method on the technical data sheet |
| Temperature Rating | Depends on film thickness, adhesive system, duration, and application conditions |
| Flame Performance | Available only where specifically stated for the selected grade; request supporting documentation when required |
Electrical properties must be matched to the finished tape construction, not the PTFE polymer alone. Final dielectric strength, breakdown voltage, adhesion, temperature range, flame classification, and dimensional tolerances are stated on the quotation and technical data sheet.
Begin with the system voltage, required insulation class, minimum creepage and clearance, operating temperature, peak temperature, conductor geometry, and number of wrap layers. The specified dielectric strength should include an appropriate safety margin and should be validated in the finished assembly. A thicker tape may provide greater insulation margin and puncture resistance, while a thinner tape reduces bulk and follows complex shapes more closely.
Surface preparation is equally important. Oil, release agents, dust, oxidation, and sharp edges can reduce adhesion or damage the film. Apply the tape with consistent overlap and pressure, avoiding trapped air and excessive stretch. For long-term thermal cycling, chemical exposure, or outdoor use, evaluate samples under the actual duty cycle before production approval.
PTFE tape is often chosen for low friction, chemical resistance, moisture resistance, and stable high-frequency electrical properties. Polyimide masking tape is typically preferred for thin high-temperature masking, soldering processes, and compact electronic assemblies. The correct choice depends on voltage, temperature, mechanical wear, thickness, adhesive residue requirements, and the applicable test standard.
Mavis can supply slit rolls, wide rolls, sheets, and die-cut insulation parts. Please provide the required thickness, width, length, quantity, application voltage, temperature range, substrate, overlap method, and any mandatory standards. Where compliance is critical, request the exact test report or certificate for the quoted grade before approval.
No. Flame classification applies only to a specific material construction tested to a defined method and thickness. It should not be assumed unless it is documented for the offered grade.
Some PTFE constructions are intended for very high temperatures, but continuous service depends on the adhesive, load, exposure time, and assembly design. Use the selected grade’s technical data sheet as the final limit.
Yes. Custom slitting and die-cutting are available. Tolerance depends on material thickness, roll width, and order quantity.
