Amber polyimide PCB masking tape is a thin, high-temperature tape made from polyimide film with a pressure-sensitive silicone adhesive. Its transparent amber color makes placement easy to inspect during assembly, while the film provides dimensional stability and electrical insulation in compact electronic processes. It is commonly used to protect gold fingers, contacts, pads, connectors, and heat-sensitive areas during wave soldering, reflow, coating, plating, and related manufacturing steps.
| Backing | Amber translucent polyimide film |
| Adhesive | Pressure-sensitive silicone adhesive |
| Typical Total Thickness | 0.06 / 0.08 / 0.10 mm, depending on grade |
| Color | Amber / translucent yellow |
| Width | Precision slit widths commonly available from 3 mm; custom widths and die cuts available |
| Length | 33 m standard option; other lengths subject to converting requirements |
| Temperature Guidance | Designed for elevated-temperature processes; final continuous and peak limits are grade-dependent |
| Removal Performance | Clean-removal grades available; confirm on the actual surface and thermal cycle |
| Electrical Properties | Thickness- and test-method-dependent; values provided on the technical data sheet |
The table describes common configurations. Final film source, thickness, adhesion, temperature rating, dielectric performance, residue requirement, and tolerances are confirmed for the quoted grade. A specific trademarked film or certification is supplied only when explicitly identified in the quotation.
Provide the peak process temperature, time above temperature, number of thermal cycles, board finish, soldering method, tape width, and removal timing. ENIG, hard gold, solder mask, bare copper, and component surfaces may respond differently to the same adhesive. Flux chemistry, cleaning agents, board contamination, and storage conditions can also affect adhesion and residue.
For narrow gold fingers, select a slit width that covers the contact area without interfering with adjacent solder joints. Firm pressure along the tape edge helps prevent flux or coating from migrating underneath. Avoid excessive stretching during application, because tension can cause edge lifting when the tape heats and cools.
“No residue” should be treated as a process result rather than an unconditional material claim. Before volume production, test the proposed grade on the actual PCB finish using the intended reflow or wave-solder profile, flux, dwell time, cleaning method, and removal temperature. Confirm that the tape remains flat, protects the required area, removes without damaging the finish, and leaves no unacceptable adhesive transfer.
Mavis supplies standard rolls, precision-slit rolls, discs, tabs, frames, and custom die-cut shapes. Send the drawing or required width, length, thickness, quantity, liner requirement, application surface, and thermal profile. For automated placement, include roll direction, core size, pitch, and maximum splice requirements.
“Kapton” is a trademark associated with specific polyimide film products. Amber polyimide tape is a general product category. If a specific film brand, origin, or certification is required, state it in the inquiry so the quotation can identify the exact construction.
Appropriate grades are used for short high-temperature soldering cycles, but performance depends on the full temperature profile and dwell time. Validate a sample in the actual process.
