Black polyimide light-blocking tape combines a thin polyimide film with a matte black surface and a pressure-sensitive adhesive. It is developed for electronic and optical assemblies that need heat resistance, electrical insulation, controlled reflectivity, and reduced light transmission in one compact material. Typical uses include display modules, camera assemblies, sensors, optical instruments, battery packs, and internal electronic components where ordinary amber tape would remain visually or optically transparent.
| Backing | Black polyimide film |
| Surface | Matte or low-gloss black, depending on grade |
| Adhesive | Pressure-sensitive silicone or application-specific adhesive |
| Typical Total Thickness | 0.06 / 0.08 mm and other grade-dependent constructions |
| Width | Precision slit widths commonly available from 3 mm; custom die cuts available |
| Length | 33 m standard option; custom roll formats subject to converting requirements |
| Light Blocking | High-opacity grades available; optical density or transmittance must be confirmed by wavelength and test method |
| Temperature Guidance | Grade-dependent; final continuous and short-term limits are stated on the technical data sheet |
| Removal Performance | Depends on adhesive, substrate, temperature, pressure, and dwell time |
Black appearance does not by itself guarantee complete blocking at every wavelength. Final opacity, optical density, gloss, adhesion, dielectric strength, temperature rating, and residue requirement are confirmed for the quoted grade.
For display and camera applications, specify the wavelength range, maximum permitted transmission, viewing angle, gloss requirement, and the location of the tape relative to the light source or sensor. Visible-light opacity may not predict infrared performance, and a visually black tape can still transmit energy outside the tested range. Where optical performance is critical, request data for the required wavelength and validate a converted sample in the final assembly.
Matte surface texture also matters. A low-gloss finish can reduce reflections, but the correct result depends on assembly geometry, nearby surfaces, adhesives, and incident angle. Die-cut edge quality and dimensional tolerance are important around camera apertures and narrow display borders.
Confirm peak temperature, dwell time, number of cycles, substrate, removal timing, and any cleaning chemicals. Silicone adhesive is often selected for elevated-temperature use, but adhesion and residue behavior vary on glass, coated metal, plastics, solder mask, and battery materials. Test the tape after the complete thermal and aging cycle before production release.
Mavis can supply master rolls, narrow slit rolls, tabs, washers, frames, rings, and custom die-cut parts with or without a release liner. Provide a drawing, material thickness, width, roll direction, liner, pitch, core size, quantity, optical requirement, temperature profile, and target substrate. For automated assembly, include dimensional tolerance and splice requirements.
Performance must be defined by wavelength, transmittance or optical-density target, and test method. We can match a high-opacity grade, but the final requirement should be verified on the technical data sheet and in the finished assembly.
Amber polyimide tape is translucent and well suited to visual alignment during PCB masking. Black tape is selected where light control, reduced reflection, or black appearance is required.
